In 2019, the Director of Policy Planning under Trump 1.0 was fired from the State Department. Kiron Kanina Skinner, famous among conservatives for her biographies of Ronald Reagan and what has been referred to as “unparalleled strategic thinking,” was considered a slam dunk hire for rebuilding a State Department in disarray. But almost immediately, the people started to side eye Skinner. First, she made the erroneous and offensive statement that China would be a tough opponent for the U.S. because “it’s the first time that we will have a great-power competitor that is not Caucasian.”

But then came her firing, about a year into her tenure, when she was accused of having an “abusive management style,” which led to a third of her twenty-person team quitting and five more threatening to quit if she wasn’t let go. Her behavior also included openly homophobic insults AND accusing subordinates of having an affair. Honestly, you’d think she’d be right at home in the Trump administration, but “abusive management” and open homophobia were a hair too far for the administration. C’est la vie.
